Mastering the IELTS Reading test is about deploying the right strategy for the right task.

In this series of IELTS Reading lessons, we explored skills like reading for gist, scanning for detail, and the skill connecting both.

Today's lesson tackles what makes those strategies work efficiently: Keyword Identification.

Keyword technique is fundamental for finding answers in both the Academic IELTS and General Training IELTS.

However, to ensure variety and align with everyday language, we will focus on improving this skill through IELTS general reading practice tests.

The texts in Section 1 and 2 of IELTS GT Reading—notices, advertisements, job descriptions—are perfect for mastering this technique before applying it to more complex material.

The official test partners recognize that the 60-minute time limit is a major challenge. The keyword technique is not just a test tip; it is the essential time-management tool transforming you from a passive reader into an active information hunter.

Understanding Keywords in IELTS Reading

A keyword is not just any important word. Throughout your Reading sessions and IELTS general reading practice tests, you'll find that a keyword is like a locator term.

It is a word or short phrase in the question that you can "grab onto" to navigate the passage. Its primary job is to lead you to the one or two sentences containing the answer.

🧩 What Makes a Word a Keyword?

Keywords are typically content words that carry specific, concrete meaning and are least likely to be completely changed in the passage.

We can categorize them for easier identification:

Paraphrasing Is the Game

One of the most important concepts in both Academic and IELTS General Reading.

🔸 The passage will now always contain the exact same keywords as the question

Examiners write questions by paraphrasing the original text. Therefore, your true skill lies in matching meaning, not words.

Examples:

Passage says: youngsters, minors, young people

💡 Your goal is to build a mental bridge between the wording of the question and the phrasing of the passage.

Keyword Identification Process

In your IELTS General Reading practice tests, try this repeatable process for every single question:

🧩 Analyze & Mark the Question (Before Reading the Text)

Read the question carefully for meaning.
Identify and underline 2-3 core keywords. Prioritize: Proper Nouns/Numbers > Specific Nouns > Key Verbs.
Predict synonyms for these keywords. What other way could this idea be expressed? It’s like preparing your mind for the next step.

🧩 Execute a Targeted Scan

Do not read the passage yet. Move your eyes quickly over the text, looking only for your keywords and their synonyms/paraphrasing.
Your mission is to find a "match," not to understand the paragraph. Ignore all other information.
Stop scanning when you spot a potential match.

🧩 Read to Verify

Read carefully the specific sentence containing your matched keyword and the sentences immediately before and after it.
Ask yourself: Does the meaning here directly answer the question? Does it support or contradict a statement?
Confirm the answer comes strictly from this text, not your own knowledge or assumptions.

Let's apply the process to a sample True/False/Not Given question.

Sample Question:

The community centre's gardening workshop in April is specifically designed for experienced gardeners only.

Walkthrough:

🧩 Keywords: community centre, gardening workshop, April, experienced gardeners.

🧩 Scan:

You scan the relevant text section. You find this sentence:

"The Greenfields Community Centre will host a beginners' gardening class on April 22nd, introducing novices to basic planting techniques."

🧩 Read to Verify:

You found matches for "community centre" and "April."

The text says, "beginners' gardening class" (a synonym for "novices" and an antonym for “experienced”)

The question claims it is for "experienced gardeners only."

The text directly contradicts this by stating it is for "beginners" and "novices."

✔️ Therefore, the answer is FALSE.
