Summary: The essay is under the minimum word count requirement (223 words vs. 250 required), which limits the development of ideas and reduces the Task Response score. The response addresses the prompt by discussing advantages and disadvantages, but the arguments lack depth and specific examples. Coherence is adequate with a clear structure, but cohesion could be stronger. Vocabulary is limited and repetitive, and grammatical structures are simple with minor errors. Overall, the essay shows basic competence but does not meet the length criteria for a higher band.

Many young people choose to take a gap year after finishing high school and before starting university, during which they may work or travel abroad. While this trend has several advantages, it also comes with certain disadvantages.
On the one hand, taking a gap year can help students make better academic decisions. This is because, after years of continuous study, students often feel exhausted and unsure about their future. As a result, they may choose courses that do not suit their interests or abilities. Taking a gap year allows them to assess themselves and explore different options, leading to more informed decisions. For example, many students who take time off to gain experience are more confident in selecting the right field of study.
On the other hand, a gap year can have negative effects on academic performance. Students may lose touch with their studies and forget important concepts, which can make it difficult to return to education. Consequently, they may struggle to perform well in university. Another drawback is that some universities prefer students with continuous academic records. Therefore, those who take a gap year may face increased competition when applying for their preferred courses.
In conclusion, although taking a gap year can help students make better decisions about their future, it may also lead to academic difficulties and reduced opportunities for admission.

Task Response5
Evaluation
The essay addresses the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of taking a gap year. However, the response is underdeveloped due to the insufficient word count (223 words, below the required 250). The advantages and disadvantages are mentioned but lack detailed explanation, specific examples, or a balanced discussion. The conclusion is present but brief.
Examples
The advantage of 'making better academic decisions' is supported by a general statement about students feeling exhausted, but no specific example or evidence is provided. The disadvantage of 'negative effects on academic performance' is similarly vague.
How to Improve
Expand each point with real-world examples, data, or more detailed reasoning. Ensure the essay meets the minimum word count of 250 words to fully develop the arguments. Consider adding a third advantage or disadvantage for balance.
Coherence & Cohesion5.5
Evaluation
The essay has a clear overall structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs (one for advantages, one for disadvantages), and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately. However, within paragraphs, the progression is somewhat simplistic, and there is limited use of linking words to connect ideas.
Examples
The transition from the advantage paragraph to the disadvantage paragraph is clear. However, within the advantage paragraph, the sentence 'This is because...' could be better linked to the previous statement.
How to Improve
Use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', 'Nevertheless', 'As a result') to show relationships between sentences. Add more internal paragraph development, such as linking causes to effects more explicitly.
Lexical Resource5
Evaluation
The vocabulary used is adequate but basic. Words like 'advantages', 'disadvantages', 'young people', 'gap year' are repeated. There is some attempt at variety (e.g., 'assess themselves', 'informed decisions', 'academic difficulties'), but the range is limited. Collocations are mostly correct, but no sophisticated or topic-specific vocabulary is present.
Examples
'Studying' is used repeatedly; could be replaced with 'academic pursuits' or 'educational commitments'. 'Lose touch with their studies' is a decent phrase. No idiomatic language or precise academic terms.
How to Improve
Expand vocabulary by using synonyms (e.g., 'pros and cons', 'undergraduates', 'hiatus', 'enrolment') and more precise terms (e.g., 'academic maturity', 'career exploration'). Practice using less common lexical items relevant to education and personal development.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy5.5
Evaluation
The grammatical structures are mostly simple and compound sentences. There are no major errors, but the range is limited. For example, conditional sentences or complex clauses are absent. Punctuation is generally correct. A few minor issues like missing article ('after years of continuous study' is fine, but structure is repetitive).
Examples
'While this trend has several advantages, it also comes with certain disadvantages.' – correct but simple. 'Consequently, they may struggle to perform well in university.' – correct. No use of subordinate clauses like 'because', 'although' beyond the introductory phrases.
How to Improve
Incorporate a variety of sentence structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If students take a gap year, they may...'), relative clauses, and passive voice where appropriate. Practice writing complex sentences to show grammatical flexibility while maintaining accuracy.
