The internet has significantly changed the way people communicate, connecting individuals across the globe and making the world seem smaller. While many believe that it has simplified communication through speed and convenience, others argue that it has also created certain challenges. This essay discusses both views before presenting a clear opinion.

On the one hand, the internet has made communication faster and more efficient. People can send messages instantly through emails, social media, and messaging applications, regardless of distance. This has reduced the need for physical travel and expensive communication methods. In addition, it allows individuals to stay connected with family, friends, and colleagues at any time. For example, video calls enable face-to-face interaction even when people live in different countries. As a result, communication has become more convenient and accessible for everyone.

On the other hand, the internet has also introduced some drawbacks. One major issue is the lack of personal interaction, which can affect the quality of communication. Online conversations may lead to misunderstandings because tone and emotions are not always clear. Moreover, excessive use of digital communication can reduce face-to-face social skills and create feelings of isolation. Another concern is the spread of misinformation, which can confuse people and make communication less reliable.

In conclusion, although the internet has some disadvantages, it has largely simplified communication by making it quicker and more accessible. I agree with the statement largely, as the benefits outweigh the drawbacks when used responsibly.

Task Response5.5
Evaluation
The candidate presents both sides of the argument and states a clear opinion. However, the arguments are somewhat underdeveloped and lack specific, detailed examples. The essay is also slightly under the required word count (241 vs 250), which prevents full development.
Examples
The essay mentions video calls and misinformation but does not elaborate with concrete instances or data. The conclusion is brief and could be more nuanced.
How to Improve
Expand each paragraph with more detailed examples and explanations. Ensure the essay meets the minimum word count by developing points further, e.g., discussing specific platforms, cultural exchanges, or case studies on communication challenges.
Coherence & Cohesion6
Evaluation
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each side, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, though transitions between ideas could be smoother.
Examples
Phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' effectively signal structure. However, within paragraphs, sentences are sometimes simply listed without strong logical connectors.
How to Improve
Use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to improve flow. Ensure each paragraph has a clear central topic and that ideas progress logically within and between paragraphs.
Lexical Resource6
Evaluation
Vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. Some words are repeated, and there is limited use of topic-specific terminology.
Examples
Repeated use of 'communication', 'internet', and 'people'. Phrases like 'made communication faster' and 'more convenient' are functional but basic.
How to Improve
Incorporate more precise vocabulary (e.g., 'virtual interaction', 'global connectivity', 'digital divide', 'nuanced understanding'). Use synonyms and collocations related to technology and communication.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy6
Evaluation
Grammar is mostly accurate with only minor errors. Sentence structures are predominantly simple and compound, with limited use of complex structures.
Examples
Minor error in word order: 'I agree with the statement largely' should be 'I largely agree with the statement'. Sentences like 'This has reduced the need...' are correct but simple.
How to Improve
Use a mix of complex sentences (e.g., conditional, relative clauses) to demonstrate range. Practice advanced structures such as participle clauses or inverted conditionals while maintaining accuracy.
