Young people are often influenced by the environment and people around them, which can sometimes lead them into criminal activities. Some people argue that the best way to stop youths from becoming criminals is through mentoring by former offenders who have changed their lives. Others believe that trained educators and psychologists are better suited for this responsibility.

Firstly, people who have overcome a criminal past can serve as powerful role models for young people. Since they have experienced the negative consequences of crime firsthand, they can speak honestly about the dangers of violence, drug abuse, and imprisonment. Their real-life experiences may have a stronger impact on teenagers than advice from someone who has never faced such challenges. In addition, troubled youths may feel more comfortable opening up to mentors who understand their struggles and backgrounds.

Furthermore, professional educators and psychologists possess the skills and training required to guide young people effectively. Psychologists are trained to identify emotional or behavioural problems that may push teenagers toward crime. Similarly, teachers and counsellors know how to communicate with students, provide discipline, and create supportive, safe learning environments. Unlike former criminals, these professionals follow structured and ethical methods when dealing with young people.

In my opinion, professional educators and psychologists are more suitable for preventing criminal behaviour because they are properly trained for this role. However, former offenders can also play an important part by sharing their experiences in awareness programmes. Therefore, combining both approaches would likely produce the most effective and best results.
