The widespread presence of violence in television programmes and films has long been a subject of public debate. Many people argue that repeated exposure to such content shapes the behaviour of young viewers and contributes to increasing levels of aggression in society. I strongly agree with this view, as media violence can significantly influence children's psychological development and social behaviour. However, with appropriate intervention from families, schools, and governments, its harmful effects can be substantially reduced.
One of the most compelling reasons why violent media affects young people is that children and adolescents are highly impressionable. At an early stage of life, individuals often learn behavioural patterns through observation and imitation. When young viewers are repeatedly exposed to scenes in which conflicts are resolved through physical aggression, they may begin to perceive violence as a normal or even effective method of dealing with problems. This influence becomes even stronger when violent characters are portrayed as powerful, admirable, or successful figures. Consequently, some children may unconsciously adopt aggressive attitudes or behaviours in their daily interactions.
Moreover, continuous exposure to violent entertainment can gradually desensitize young audiences. In other words, frequent encounters with aggression on screen may reduce emotional sensitivity toward real-life suffering. This can lead to a decline in empathy, increased tolerance of harmful behaviour, and, in some cases, a greater likelihood of engaging in bullying or physical confrontation. When such attitudes become widespread among younger generations, the broader social consequences can be deeply concerning.
To mitigate this issue, several immediate measures should be implemented. First, parents must take a more active role in supervising their children's viewing habits and discussing the difference between fictional entertainment and acceptable real-world behaviour. Second, governments and media regulators should enforce stricter age classifications and restrict the broadcast of excessively violent content during hours when children are most likely to be watching. Finally, educational institutions should incorporate emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, and empathy training into school curricula to help young people develop healthier social values.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that violent content in films and television can negatively influence young people's behaviour and contribute to rising aggression in society. Nevertheless, through responsible parenting, effective regulation, and quality education, this problem can be significantly minimized.
