The idea that exposure to violence in television and movies influences young people’s behaviour and contributes to rising violence in society is widely debated. I largely agree with this statement, as repeated exposure to violent content can shape attitudes, desensitize viewers, and normalize aggressive behaviour. However, media is not the sole factor, and addressing the issue requires a balanced and practical approach.
Firstly, young people are particularly impressionable. When they frequently watch violent scenes, they may begin to perceive aggression as an acceptable way to resolve conflicts. Psychological research suggests that repeated exposure can reduce emotional sensitivity to violence, making individuals less empathetic toward victims. In some cases, children and teenagers may imitate what they see on screen, especially when violent characters are portrayed as powerful or successful. This imitation can gradually influence real-life behaviour.
However, it would be simplistic to blame media alone. Family environment, education, peer influence, and socioeconomic conditions also play significant roles in shaping behaviour. For instance, a child raised in a supportive and disciplined environment is less likely to be negatively affected by violent media compared to one lacking guidance or supervision. Therefore, media is one contributing factor among many.
To reduce violence in society, several steps can be taken. Firstly, stricter content regulations and age-appropriate ratings should be enforced to limit children’s exposure to violent media. Secondly, parents should actively monitor and guide their children’s viewing habits, encouraging critical thinking about what they watch. Schools can also play a role by promoting moral education and conflict-resolution skills. Additionally, media producers should be encouraged to create content that emphasizes positive values rather than glorifying violence.
In conclusion, while media violence does influence young people’s behaviour to a considerable extent, it is not the only cause of societal violence. A combined effort from families, educators, policymakers, and the media industry is essential to effectively address and reduce violence in society.
